Wow! I'm In Love With Boxing!!

I have been working out in the gym for a few months but I sort of felt a little of the same routine, upon learning that I had a colleague who does Muay Thai, he told me I should try out boxing. I was kind of in the curious side about the sport since it did become a fad. And hey I'm thinking, If Judy Ann (Santos) can do it, well I bet so can I.

Happily this afternoon with 2 hours sleep, I trot off to the gym with 2 of my colleagues. WE meet up at Mc Donalds and crazily I order a sundae and regular fires. Tori (colleague from work) blurts out "You are seriously going to eat that, before working out?" and I grin why gobbling down the fries.

Wearing jogging pants, a sleeveless shirt and a pair of boxing shoes. I happily line up with the others as we are given instructions to stretch by one of the Muay Thai instructors. Sweat just exploded in every part of my body and it was hard to keep on balance with some of the stretching needing you to hold one leg up.

Then arrived my boxing instructor Ailyn. I was so enticed to know the instructor would be female, it made me a lot more comfortable. so she takes over and helps me through my stretching. After 10 mins of stretching we start with the actual lesson.

Ailyn patiently teaches me to punch with a jab (weaker arm) and to punch straight (stronger arm) and teaches me combination punches. All of this is done with just punching but not hitting anything yet. First with weights then without.

We would get intervals of 30 seconds rest after 10mins of training. With all the perspiration I was producing, I couldn't believe that I had drank soooooo much water!

After a few practices, Ailyn sets me up in hand wraps and gets me into boxing gloves. I loved the punching, and how she would say what punch I would need to give. Footwork came after and I was gradually getting the feel of actually boxing. Everytime she would call for a 30sec rest I could feel my body was giving up. I knew I had not have that much stamina and lack of sleep and It was taking it's toll on me. However I was challenged to push myself to my limits and I was gladly able to finish the 2 hour session with an abs workout to cap it off.

Ailyn asks me to lie down on a mat and makes me do crunches and streches my body just like they would in the spa, she massages my back and i hear my bones cracking. hehehe

I was so ecstatic of the experience that I decided to make it a once a week ritual.

Things I learned from the session:

  • That even if I'm left handed my Jab is better.
  • Bring 5 gallons of water to drink (kidding) but bring ample enough of fluids to drink.
  • When I think of my Boss it makes me punch harder (aha!).
  • Working with a trainer is the best way to work out.
  • Bring a whole set of change of clothes because you would be pig sweating through the workout.
  • Get your own Had wraps and gloves if hygiene is that important to you.
